Dubai Port London Gateway is a £1.5bn development covering 560 acres on the north bank of The Thames on the site of the former Shellhaven refinery near Stanford Le Hope. It has, literally, the capacity to change the Railfreight container business and directly challenges Southampton and Felixstowe docks.

The new port is scheduled to open for business in Quarter 4 next year with trials commencing in as little as six months. From day 1, Carston Hinne DB Schenker MD said, DB Schenker will be operating four daily trains to the port which is just 25 miles from London. The message given out at an Industry preview day was that Rail services to and from London Gateway will offer regular, easy and efficient movement of goods to and from the major commercial and population centres across the UK.

The maiden voyage of the 18,000 teu vessel Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller has been accompanied by much fanfare about record container handling productivity at various ports. Whilst it is generally true that larger vessels can facilitate faster port handling, the correlation between ship size and speed of port handling is not necessarily linear.

The move by all major carriers towards ever larger vessels in the pursuit of economies of scale is not automatically matched by similar advantages in terms of the speed of port handling. For shipping lines, what matters is turnaround time from vessel arrival to vessel departure – and essentially this means berth moves per hour across the ship. A key factor is gantry crane intensity across the ship, i.e. the maximum and average number of cranes deployed during the port call.

LA WATCHDOG - The Port of Los Angeles is a major economic component of the Southern California economy, responsible, along with Port of Long Beach, for economic activity that supports over 900,000 jobs. However, the Port has run into strong headwinds as the volume of imported containers has slipped 6% over the last twelve months.

Even exports of loaded containers are down 12% this year after almost doubling over the last ten years.

These lower volumes, both of which are about 10% below their peak volumes, should serve as a wakeup call to the management of the Port, its Board of politically appointed commissioners, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and the City Council, especially as the competitive environment for international waterborne trade is increasing, eating into the Port’s market share and revenues and the incomes of Southern Californians.
