The Team

The Grid Team

GRID is a consortium of designers, engineers, architects, attorneys, businesspeople, advocates for sustainable transportation and transit-oriented development, environmental activists, and labor leaders. These men and women span the political spectrum from left to right and are committed to working together for GRID and the constituencies and communities it will benefit.

Each of these educated, professional individuals has been investing “sweat equity” into GRID for months or years.  Here are just a few key members of our team:

David J. Alba, Project Designer (Co-Founder)

A native Angeleno, David, a port dock manager for many years, originated the design of the SuperDock to streamline the movement of ISO containers through the ports and beyond. David discovered his life’s purpose upon realizing that the innovations he helped to develop created tremendous opportunities not only for the ports, but for the regional environment, as well as for the national economy and for jobs creation.

David is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s School of International Relations.

Richard Mueller P.E. (Co-Founder)

Richard is a licensed professional engineer in California, Texas, and Oklahoma.  He has been involved in the design and fabrication of large diameter pipe and pipelines for over 30 years.  He is also experienced in the research and design of using such pipe for transporting solid freight.

Richard was recognized as “Engineer of the Year” by the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers in 2000, and as a Distinguished Civil Engineering Graduate of Texas A&M University in 2011. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, and has a Masters of Engineering Management from Southern Methodist University.

Sherwood H. Egbert, Vice-President of Business Development

Since childhood, Sherwood was intimately involved within his family-owned company, Shapco Inc., which includes subsidiary companies Kelly Pipe Co LLC, Custom Pipe & Coupling Inc., Imperial Pipe Services LLC, and Lavi Systems, Inc., giving him a wealth of business knowledge and applied experience within the steel pipe supply industry.  In addition to his family business, Sherwood also gained port-related experience working for the air quality group within the Environmental Management Division at the Port of Los Angeles as a student-worker during his time at USC.

He graduated from the Environmental Studies and Earth Sciences Departments at the University of Southern California in 2013 with a B.S. degree in environmental studies, and a minor in geology.

Judy A. Bergstresser

Judy has spent two decades in analog electronic design automation software development, specializing in technical writing, marketing and business development.  She is a lifelong activist and community organizer for social justice and urban environmental preservation.  A member of numerous Southern California advocacy groups, Judy also serves on the AQMD Environmental Justice Advisory Committee working on the development of California’s Climate Change Scoping Plan and other matters pertinent to the implementation of AB 32.  She performs strategic development and communications for the GRID project as well as community outreach.  Judy is an alumna of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and attended New York University.

Richard (Rick) Risemberg

Rick has been writing about and working on sustainable transportation and development for over twelve years. He edits two online magazines, contributes to online and paper publications, including planning journals, and consults with organizations such as Carfree Cities and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. He sees in GRID an opportunity to help realize a triple-bottom-line project that is socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable and beneficial—one that may change how development is perceived in the United States for generations to come.

Bart Reed

Bart Reed is the Executive Director of the Transit Coalition, a San Fernando Valley based non-profit dealing with transportation policy, planning and land use issues. In this capacity, he is a nationwide advocate for effective transportation systems and solutions. Reed, an often-quoted transit advocate, addresses citizen and community groups about public transportation issues, including autos, rail, bus, bicycles, roads, ADA, goods movement, and pedestrian safety.
